Great Loop Risk Planning

Great Loop Trouble Spots Atlas

This is not a chart replacement. It is a planning lens for the places and situations that deserve extra research before you arrive tired, hot, low on fuel, or committed to a schedule.

Last reviewed: 2026-06-26. Verify all details with current charts, Notices to Mariners, Coast Guard/local notices, lock/bridge authorities, marina calls, weather, and recent cruiser reports.

Risk categories to research before each segment

Shoaling and skinny water

ICW trouble areas, shifting bars, inlet-adjacent cuts, marina approaches, and anchorages where yesterday's track is not proof.

Bridge clusters

Low bridges, restricted openings, rush-hour limits, railroad bridges, current under bridges, and stacked wait times.

Locks and commercial traffic

Tow priority, lock delays, floating bollards, turbulence, line handling, and fatigue after repeated lock days.

Current and debris

Inland rivers, spring flow, post-storm debris, eddies near docks, and slow maneuvering in fast water.

Exposed water

Delaware Bay, New Jersey coast, Great Lakes, Georgian Bay/North Channel, Big Bend, and any long fetch that turns wind into a decision.

Sparse services

Fuel gaps, limited haul-outs, parts shipping delays, marina closures, seasonal hours, and weak cellular coverage.

Segment-by-segment stress scan

Segment difficulty matrix

Use this as a research priority list. A high rating does not mean “do not go.” It means verify current conditions, set a bailout plan, and avoid schedule pressure.

What to ask before a high-stress leg

Pre-arrival research checklist

Before entering a known-risk area, confirm: current chart data, recent local notices, bridge/lock status, fuel availability, bailout stops, daylight left, weather window, crew condition, and the decision point where you will turn around or wait.
